A dangerous gully erosion is threatening to wash off the residents of Parliamentary Extension, after Uddy King filling station in Calabar metropolis, Cross River State.
CALABAR REPORTERS gathered that the gully erosion which lies at the periphery of the newly built Calabar (Ayade) Power Plant is also threatening the gigantic project yet to be commissioned.
A resident of the area who spoke under anonymity with CALABAR REPORTERS on Wednesday said the gully erosion which is about to divide the road has been there for a long period of time now.
He said the gully has already swallowed a Toyota Camry late last, adding that the dreaded gully has also engulfed a foundation and a concrete fence erected in the area.
His words: “Last year, a Toyota Camry fell inside the gully. When the vehicle was recovered, we discovered the driver was new in the area and it was at night.
“The gully is eating deeper and deeper and into the road in that a man who tried to dodged it ended up with his vehicle on the fence. You can even see the traces of the mark still on the fence.”
The Resident further disclose that if the gully is not fixed, then the people of the area will be cutoff from electricity and road network.
“You can see how spreading the gully is becoming and almost affecting the high tension. And if it does, then we will be cutout from power and will remain in darkness – even the road too, there won’t be any passing through.
“A man that has this land has tried his best, but his resources cannot contain it, so he decided to sell the land to North West. He’s put even a concrete fence, but the gully has collapsed it. You can see it by yourself,” he said.
Meanwhile, another resident called on the Government to come to their rescue, adding that, “Even the Ayade Power Plant is at the verge of collapsing too if the gully is not properly dressed.”
Photos from our Reporter shows that any more heavy rainfall might lead to the division of the road, thereby forcing residents and shop owners to evacuate the area.
